“Aakhi” meaning eye and “Jhyal” meaning window, Aakhi Jhyal is a finest example of woodcarving tradition amongst the Newari community of Nepal. They are skilled master crafters of wood, metal, stone etc. Nepal is filled with this artworks and landmarks crafted by generations of master carvers. This intricate detail carved in window is crafted by master carver of Bhaktapur, Surya Bahadhur Shilpakar, who comes from generations of this trade. This specific design is called “Suryamukhi” Aakhi Jhyal, the center of the window is dome shaped sun carved and surrounded by coiled snakes, hence the name is derived from. The top semi-circle dome consist of Bhairav and buddha, this design is mostly found in shrines or place of worships. This particular design is created as a décor piece and it is inspired by the suryamukhi window found in Dattatreya Temple, Bhaktapur, Nepal.
